Cryptocurrency Slang Vocabilary And What It Means

HODL

Its misspelled of “hold” later referred to Hold On for Dear Life. A Crypto trader who buys a coin and does not see himself selling it in the near future ( Months or Years )

FOMO

‘fear of missing out’. The feeling when you see a price rising and you don’t own that coin, so you sell other other coins or put more fiat money to buy the rising coin. FOMO is a huge factor in the cryptocurrency trading so be careful what you are doing.

FUD

‘fear, uncertainty and doubt’. 
Example: Bill Gates said that Bitcoin is a bubble and everyone should sell their bitcoins. Suddenly there is a huge price drop because people believe what Bill Gates is saying.

ATH

“All-Time High”. Example: Bitcoin hit $ 20k. The price is all time high a.k.a historical price. You get it !:) 

Whale

Player with huge amounts  of cryptocurrency. Those people are dangerous because they can drive the market up,down and sideways.

Pump and Dump

Pump and dump is a scheme that attempts to boost the price of a current stock through recommendations based on false, misleading or greatly exaggerated statements.
Example: False news making the bitcoin rise (pump), at one point somebody with huge amount of bitcoin is selling their position. (dump)

Shill

Shill is when you have a coin and the coin is doing well but because you lost money from that coin you are starting to talk shit about it. Or the opposite, shit coin and you talk positive thoughts about it. Misleading information, it could be also advertising crap coin just so the price can go up.. etc.

Bag Holder

A term to refer to a trader who bought at all time high and then the price dropped. Worthless price of a coin, left the trader with “holding the bag”

Altcoin

Altcoin is every other coin without Bitcoin (BTC). Ripple, Cardano, Ethereum and etc.

Market Cap

In the cryptocurrency market, the market cap is used to illustrate a coin’s dominance in the entire cryptocurrency market.

ICO

ICO – Initial Coin Offering. Coins bought during ICO’s are usually sold for a profit when the coin first hits exchanges. This is due to the initial hype which increases demand for the coin.
Usually people are searching for good ICO’s for the money. Hoping they can find a coin with a good team, advertisement, strong audience base and of curse, coin with a purpose

BTFD

“Buy The Fucking Dip” – When people are running around and selling because of fear, this is the time to buy.

Moon

A crypto slang that means such extreme bullish movement of a coin that is heading to the Moon. Some people are using the sentence “to the moon” which also refers to a coin that is about to “head to the moon” so you have to jump on it (invest in it).

Weak Hands

Those who cannot be patient and sell at loss when the market is down. Weak hands always get cut! Don’t sell at loss!

Token Airdrop

Simply put, an Airdrop means a coin/token is distributed to the community for free. Its working as a free advertisement, cost less money than paying for advertisement and you gaining fast popularity.

Market Cap

In the Cryptocurrency market, the market cap is used to show how powerful the current coin/token is among the others. More money a coin has – more powerful that token is. 

Arbitrage

The act of buying and selling on different exchanges to earn more. Arbitrage opportunities occur due to differences in exchange rules, prices and take note that fees, limits and prices could change anytime when you are transferring your coins, especially during volatile times.

Buying and selling of securities, currency, or commodities in different markets or in derivative forms in order to take advantage of differing prices for the same asset.
